LI855 An Overview of Issues in Collection Development in the Digital Milieu

MLS Outcomes: 2B, 2C, 2D
MLS Values: PV1, PV2, PV3

The purpose of LI855 Collection Development and Management is to learn about developing, organizing, and maintaining library collections, along with the philosophical and ethical contexts in which those collections exist.  I examined the works of a number of librarians and reviewed existing collection development policies in order to ground myself in the practical theory behind collection development. This research paper considers the requirements of the digital collection from a collection development perspective, along with the special problems and opportunities they present.  In creating this artifact I interviewed professional librarians, applied current CD practices to digital objects, and researched the existing literature on digital collection development.  Through this project I gained insight into the process of selecting, acquiring, maintaining and promoting digital library collections.
