Here are some links to specific subreddits that I think librarians might particularly like:

Subreddits for librarians:

r/libraries: the subreddit all about libraries and librarianship!

r/ebooks: nothing but ebooks, all the time.

r/books: we still remember our first love

r/answers: Reddit's own reference desk

Subreddits for sharing information:

r/AskReddit: somebody on Reddit has the answer to even your hardest questions

r/askscience: I once saw a NASA rocket engineer answer a question here. It was cool.

r/asksocialscience: because people are complicated

r/explainlikeimfive: sometimes you just need a subject broken down and simplified

r/explainlikeapro: and sometimes you want to hear from an expert

r/insightfulquestions: dude, you just blew my mind

r/DepthHub: for longer, deeper reads on all manner of topics

r/scholar: [citation needed]

Subreddits about Reddit:

r/TrueReddit: some people are nostalgic for the Reddit of the good old days... of 2007.

r/TrueTrueReddit: other folks are nostalgic for the r/TrueReddit of the good old days... of 2011.

r/bestof: all the best stuff that has ever appeared on Reddit, as chosen by Redditors

r/theoryofreddit: Reddit is such a phenomenon, it now has its own theorists. For when you want to get really meta.

A subreddit for finding new subreddits, and other fun stuff:

r/subredditoftheday: another great subreddit is profiled every day

r/originalhub: a subreddit for Redditors to share their own original work, whatever it may be

r/secretsanta: a subreddit for people who like to send presents to strangers, and receive presents form other strangers in return. Holds the Guinness World Record for largest Secret Santa gift exchange!

And if you'd like to subscribe to all of these at once...

Here they all are, on one single page.

I hope this has inspired a few more librarians to wade into my own favorite social website, Reddit. There's a lot to do here, a lot to read, and a lot of information to share. And I think it's important for librarians to be active on sites like this, because I expect that as the Internet develops, this model of information seeking and using is one we'll be seeing a great deal more of in the future. I think librarians need to be playing with sites like Reddit because this is where our patrons are, and this is how they're using information. Reddit is a place where information is not just a means of education and a source of insight, but a form of entertainment!  And wherever patrons and information come together, librarians have a role to play. So go jump in!
