The main section of every page on Reddit is a list of links on the left side of the page. Posting, sharing, and discussing links is what Reddit is all about!
Links are blue when they first appear; once you've clicked on them, they turn purple. You can see that a few of these links have already been clicked!
There are two main kinds of links on Reddit: outside links that lead to items elsewhere on the Internet , and self-post links that lead to text posts inside Reddit.
Outside links are a way of sharing interesting things you've found on the Internet with other Redditors. The links go to the item in question, but Redditors can also comment and discuss those links by clicking the "comments" button below each link.
Clicking this link takes us to the website...
... while clicking on the "comments" button takes us to the link's discussion page.
The only difference with self-posts is that both links take you to the same place: the discussion.
Are you ready to try posting a link of your own? It's easy. Start by clicking the "Submit a link" button in the sidebar of every page:
Clicking this link will take you to a page where you can get your post ready.
To submit an outside link, just enter a catchy title for your post, the url of the item you want to link to, and make sure you've got the right subreddit selected. Alternately, for a self-post, click the "text" tab at the top of the posting page.
This option replaces the URL box with a box where you can enter text. Ask a question, tell a story, talk about something that's been on your mind. You can include links in your text if you like.
Once your post is ready, enter the captcha text and hit submit!
As soon as you submit your link, it will become available for other users to vote on. That's why voting on posts that you like is such an important part of being a Redditor!
